From today’s Scripture: “My companions saw the light but did not hear the voice of the one who spoke to me.”—Acts 22:9
Today the Church celebrates the dramatic conversion of St. Paul. There are two accounts of it in Acts, and the above verse is taken from Paul’s first-hand account. The only difference between the two is whether or not Paul’s companions could hear the dialogue between Paul and Jesus. Both accounts, however, say that the companions “saw the light,” a common expression that we still use to describe the experience of coming to a sudden and unexpected understanding or insight, possibly life-changing.
I like to think that Paul’s companions, whether they heard the words or not, also had a conversion experience of their own by virtue of the light they too saw as they led the newly-blind Paul by hand into Damascus.
Let us pray: Lord, may we be ever aware of the spiritual light you shine upon us, and ever open to the life-changing possibilities that your light offers us.
