Feast of Saints Simon and Jude, Apostles

Ordinary Time Header-2

From today’s Scripture: “…you are fellow citizens with the holy ones and members of the household of God, built upon the foundation of the Apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the capstone.” — Ephesians 2:19-20

What is our core identity, our primary sense of belonging? This passage depicts it beautifully. Saint Paul is addressing Gentiles of his day, but he is speaking to us, too. I find his description very grounding.

It is all too easy to allow our various other allegiances to become more important than our belonging to the family of God with Jesus as our head of household: Job and career, nationality, socio-economic status, friend group, generation, political affiliation, sports team or college, and even family identity can displace what should be our core identity as Christians. The key is to order our “memberships” rightly.

Where do I get my deepest sense of belonging and identity?

Let us pray: Father, thank you that I am a member of the Body of Christ. May my life be grounded there.
