From today’s Scripture: “After this, aware that everything was now finished, in order that the scripture might be fulfilled, Jesus said, ‘I thirst.’” —Jn 19:28

St. Teresa of Calcutta spoke often about the thirst of Jesus on the cross. In a letter to her sisters, she shared a meditation in which Jesus told her his thirst is for our love, for our surrender into his deep love for us.

During Mass one Sunday, I could hear a little one asking her mom questions about what was happening. She walked with her mother when it was time to receive communion. As they returned to their pew, this little one wept loudly and kept crying, “I want Jesus.” As I knelt, I reflected on this child’s tears and my own hunger and thirst for Jesus.

Let us pray: Jesus, help me to love you more deeply. Help me open my heart to receive your love and mercy.
