Sts. Peter & Paul

From today’s Scripture: “The Lord stood by me and gave me strength, so that through me the proclamation might be completed and all the Gentiles might hear it. And I was rescued from the lion’s mouth. The Lord will rescue me from every evil threat and will bring me safe to his heavenly Kingdom. To him be glory forever and ever. Amen.”—2 Tim 4:17-18

After many years of successful secular careers, I applied for a full-time missionary volunteer service with a faith-based organization, a huge adjustment from the status quo to a lifestyle of simplicity and obedience. It was a pilgrimage of humility; a grace-filled process when the power to love was made stronger than the love of power. I gave away many material things and gave up the lifestyle I was used to.

One day, Brother Angelo, the guardian of our volunteer community enlightened me: “It’s not a question of what you gave away or what you gave up. The question is, ‘Have you lost the desire for the things you gave away and gave up?’” In time I was able to respond to that question with certainty and joy! It was more than giving away and giving up things, what it really meant was that I allowed Jesus to transform me. “He who is mighty has done great things to me and holy is his name.”

Let us pray: Lord, help us to always come to you with gratitude in all circumstances.
