From today’s Scripture: “They had all seen him and were terrified. But at once he spoke with them, ‘Take courage, it is I, do not be afraid!’”—Mk 6:50
A few years ago, I was working among some of the poorest on the face of the earth, in the slums of Kibera, in Nairobi, Kenya. I recently asked one of the slum dwellers what keeps a smile on her face. How does she smile, in spite of the deplorable situation she finds herself in? She said she rejoices in the divine providence of God, who whispers to her, “Take courage, do not be afraid!”
God says the same to each of us. Whatever situation you may find yourself in, God is present, as he was in the mighty winds that terrified those in the boat! Trust him there. Entrust him with the situation.
Let us pray: Lord, grow my trust in you. And give me tears to shed for those who suffer pain, so that I may be your hands, to reach out to help and comfort them.
