From today’s Scripture: “The crowds asked John the Baptist, ‘What should we do?’”—Lk 3:10
“What should we do” is not a question about what is on my agenda for today but a question about my lifestyle.
Three times John the Baptist is asked, “what should we do?” First by the crowds, then the tax collectors, and finally the soldiers. John responds to the crowd and tells them to share what they have with those who have none. John’s answer to the tax collectors and soldiers is that they should act justly, and be more charitable.
If we take the same question to our prayer, we will hear a similar answer: be more generous, just, and charitable. Who in my life needs more love and compassion? Who should I treat a little more justly? And where do I see people in need of charity?
These questions can be at the top of every day’s agenda.
Let us pray: O God, I come before you to ask, “What should we do?” and to ask that you guide me so that I can generously respond to the needs of my brothers and sisters.
