From today’s Scripture: “When you see these things happening, know that the Kingdom of God is near. Amen, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.”—Lk 21:31-33
Recalling what Jesus described in the previous verses helps in understanding today’s reading. “These things” Jesus refers to are natural disasters, strife among nations, and other calamities signaling the end of the world. But in the same breath he assures us that the Kingdom of God is near and that the words of God will never leave us, just as the fig tree ripen every year, God is true and certain. When life is difficult, painful, or confusing, Jesus is with us.
Let us pray: Jesus help me respond to new developments in my life and in the world, particularly the fearful ones, with faith in you and the kingdom of God. Let me recall that you will always be with us.
