From today’s Scripture: “Pilate said to Jesus, ‘Are you the King of the Jews?’ Jesus answered, ‘Do you say this on your own or have others told you about me?’”—Jn 18:33
I wonder if in the following years Pilate reflected on this exchange. Before Pilate is Jesus of Nazareth beaten, spit upon, clothes torn, someone that Pilate may have heard of but wasn’t interested in. Pilate questions Jesus expecting Jesus to beg for his life or seek a pardon. But once again Jesus surprises by questioning Pilate. Exactly who is in charge here? Jesus goes on to explain his kingdom but Pilate is relying on others for his answer. Do we listen to Jesus or do we rely on others’ voices and opinions?
Let us pray: Jesus, throughout the gospels you continue to surprise with your life and words. Help us to cut through all the noise and to listen to your words.
