From today’s Scripture: “Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid. You heard me tell you, ‘I am going away and I will come back to you.’”—Jn 14:27-28

“Be not afraid” is repeated 366 times throughout Scripture. Over and over again, it seems we must be reminded not to be afraid. At times, the words, “Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid,” may even ring hollow in our hearts—it’s so easy to become overwhelmed by fears in challenging times.

In the midst of this, Jesus speaks gentle words of reassurance that are reminiscent of a loving parent: “I will come back to you.” These words help us to remain a people grounded in hope rather than despair. Jesus is with us and returns again and again despite life’s challenges and our fears.

Let us pray: Lord Jesus, help me to remain rooted in hope. Inspire me to share your word of consolation with others in uncertain times.
