From today’s Scripture: “The Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is his Name.”—Lk. 1:49

Mary was aware of the great work God had done on her behalf and on behalf of her people. This awareness gave her the ability to surrender herself entirely to God. But, God has done great things for me and my people, too. God has made me and them members of his family, in Baptism. God is our father; Jesus is our brother; and we are brothers and sisters of the billion member Christian family, all of us called to live with each other in unlimited joy and happiness forever. And, even when we have been unfaithful and failed to love, God has forgiven us and restored us to the joy and support of His family. Why do I ever hesitate to surrender myself entirely to God?

Let us pray: My God, this Christmas, help me to be aware of the great work you have already done in me, and help me respond appropriately.
