From today’s Scripture: “You will even be handed over by parents, brothers, relatives, and friends, and they will put some of you to death. You will be hated by all because of my name, but not a hair on your head will be destroyed. By your perseverance you will secure your lives.”—Lk 21:16-19
In today’s gospel, Jesus paints a dark future for his disciples and accurately describes what has happened throughout history to Christians. This picture of arrest and persecution seems remote from our experience. But we’ve known betrayal and unjust treatment at some point in our life either in school, work, or even in the home. How do we react to this? Do we strike back or rely on Jesus to help us work through these instances?
Let us pray: Jesus, you endured persecution and betrayal. Please give me some of that endurance so that I may stay faithful when things don’t go my way.
