From today’s Scripture: “As Jesus drew near Jerusalem, he saw the city and wept over it, saying, ‘If this day you only knew what makes for peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes.’”—Lk 19:41-42
In the Gospels earlier in this week, we have heard Jesus exhort us to invest our gold coins, reward Zaccheus for going the extra step to just catch a glimpse of him, and cure the beggar who refused to be silenced by the crowd. In today’s Gospel Jesus weeps for those who missed their opportunity. For three years, Jesus walked throughout Israel. How many Jews went about their daily lives and figured they would catch Jesus the next time he passed by? Or were just too busy to bother going to the synagogue when they heard Jesus was in town?
In the same vein, how often have I gone about my daily routine and figured I had plenty of time to volunteer in the soup kitchen, visit an ill friend, or stop and have a silent prayer at Eucharistic adoration?
Let us pray: Jesus, help me to prioritize my schedule today. Help me to stop and hear your call to build the kingdom of God.
