From today’s Scripture: “Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the other contributors to the treasury.”—Mk 12:43
Widows appear in several of our readings today. Look for them. One is on the road outside of town to find some wood, the other is donating her collection in the Temple. Both do what widows do, and they are favored by God. They were visibly humble and needy. They had no clout. Today they could be on welfare, grieving the passing of their spouse. They would be alone next to their kids in the pews. They would be babysitters during the week. Some might deserve a handicapped sign in their vehicle.
Let us pray: Jesus, you were a friend of the widows. Teach me to be friend of the orphans and their mother like you did. This was remembered by many in your time. Let it serve as an example in my actions.
