15th Sunday in Ordinary Time

OT Summer Email Header 2025-3

From today’s Scripture: “For this command that I enjoin on you today is not too mysterious and remote for you…No, it is something very near to you, already in your mouths and in your hearts; you have only to carry it out.”—Dt 30:11, 14

I find it easy to think of God and the Scriptures as mysterious and remote. And yet God says one of the Scriptures that is most essential to guiding our lives is already in our mouths and hearts, if only we were willing to carry it out.

In the Gospel, Jesus alludes to what this Scripture is—the one that references loving your neighbor as yourself. To put it another way, we can think of this as the Scripture’s Golden Rule—for in doing unto others as you would have done to you, you are able to show mercy to those who may not be able to repay you. In this way we are able to imitate God, the ultimate Good Samaritan, who showers his love upon each member of the human family, drawing no distinction between the deserving and the undeserving.

Let us pray: Dear Jesus, font of Divine Mercy, help us to imitate you in our efforts to be merciful to others.
