10th Tuesday in Ordinary Time

Pentecost Header-3

From today’s Scripture: “You are the light of the world.”—Mt 5:14

I went to Mammoth Cave with my family. While in the cave our guide turned off the light so we could experience total darkness. I can still recall the feelings of fear, disorientation, and aloneness. There are so many people living in the darkness of addiction, poverty, loneliness, violence, and despair. In this darkness, they have become disoriented and have lost their way.

Jesus is telling us that we are the light of the world. We received a candle which represents the light of Christ at our Baptism. That flame is kept alive through frequent reception of the Sacraments, prayer, scripture reading, and reflection. We are to carry this light into the darkness to light the path for those that have lost their way.

Let us pray: Lord, give me the grace to keep my candle bright and the courage to take it into the darkness, seeking those who have lost their way.
