In Hispanic culture there is a long tradition of celebrating Holy Week, Semana Santa, that involves celebrations, Masses, and processions. Latino communities in Glenmary mission areas, like every culture on the move, have brought with them faith-enriching traditions that benefit everyone. One of the treasured practices is a reenactment of the Passion and Crucifixion on Good Friday.
In Maynardville, Tenn., in the heart of Appalachia, the people of Central Point mobile home community host a Good Friday Via Crucis procession each year.
“I’ve been to outdoors Good Friday processions in Washington, D.C., and in Cincinnati, Ohio, and I must say, this is a more moving experience,” says Glenmary Brother Joe Steen.
