A Message to Our Glenmary Partners

Father Don Tranel, Director of Development

Dear Friends,

One of our Glenmary mission areas was in the middle of a major natural disaster in the past year. Specifically the high winds that ravaged South Georgia following Hurricane Michael.

Parishioners at Holy Family in Blakely, Georgia consider themselves blessed that no one was injured when church and rectory each were hit by downed trees.

Glenmary Father Dennis Holly was in Blakely when the hurricane hit. “I watched as water was pushed uphill by strong winds—it reminded me of Moses! Several families fled their mobile homes to take shelter in our Catholic church.”

Father Dennis remembers, the next day, calling Elizabeth, a Holy Family parishioner, about whether people could make it through the debris to come for Mass. She told him, “If you’re coming, we’ll be there!” Because of your support of the home missions, parishioners like Elizabeth had a Catholic church home to find comfort, support, and relief when disaster hit.

But it’s about more than disaster relief. Our priests and brothers are on the ground in places like Blakely, where Father Mike Kerin ministers as local pastor, Brother Jason Muhlenkamp runs an after-school program with local families in poverty, and Brother Levis Kuwa works as a nurse. These three men, along with their fellow Glenmarians, do whatever it takes to establish the Catholic church, a loving faith community that reaches out to neighbors in need.

Friend, will you make a gift to help us bring the joy of our Catholic faith to people in rural America like Elizabeth? Our faith in Jesus is something we don’t keep to ourselves. Together, let’s follow our Lord’s command to “Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature.”

That’s what you do when you support Glenmary Home Missioners: You are spreading the gospel in areas where often less than 1% of the population is Catholic. Our counties are poor (up to 28% of people live in poverty), and a vast majority are unchurched. We bring the gospel both in word and deed. Won’t you join us in sharing that Good News?

We thank God daily for your support, offering your prayer intentions at daily Mass. In her own way, Elizabeth thanks you for being there for Glenmary and doing whatever it takes to keep the doors of her mission church open and Mass celebrated. May God bless you for being a co-missioner with Glenmary!

P.S. Would you consider an automatic monthly donation to support the home missions? Monthly giving provides us with a predictable income, which allows us to more effectively plan ministries like Brother Jason’s after-school program in Blakely, where kids like McKenzie (right) have a safe place to spend the afternoon.

P.P.S. Your generosity is a gift that we never take for granted. Please know that Glenmary never has-and never will-sell or give out any of your personal information to other organizations.
