Seventh Sunday of Easter

To dwell in God’s house

From today’s Scripture: “One thing I ask of the LORD; this I seek: To dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life.”—Ps 27:4

How much we desire to be in the right place! Once I had the great privilege of going on pilgrimage to Assisi, Italy, and the surrounding area, in the footsteps of St. Francis. We took a long path up to Mount Alverno, a very important place for St. Francis. Along the path, climbing through the woods, I couldn’t help but think, “this reminds me of Appalachia!” It was a moment of insight as I realized, we don’t need to travel far from home to be on holy ground.

We  want to live in the right part of town, or we might want to live closer to our adult children, or we want to live near the oceans, or near the mountains—the list goes on. The truth for all of us is, we are here and it is  now. Whatever we’re going to do with our lives, it’s already happening. We are dwelling in the house of the Lord, right here, right now.

Let us pray: Dear Lord, help me to see beyond distractions to appreciate what you have placed before my very eyes. Nurture in me a desire to know your presence everywhere I go, among all the people I meet.
