Second Thursday of Easter Season

A change within

From today’s Scripture: “The one who comes from above is above all. The one who is of the earth is earthly and speaks of earthly things.” Jn 3:31

Today we encounter a man, Peter, speaking boldly about Jesus. He faces almost certain death by the religious authorities. Yet Peter not only associates himself with the man Jesus, but he indeed proclaims his resurrection, his truly claiming the power that the authorities thought they had in putting him to death on the cross.

Contrast this same Peter who just a short time earlier was cursing a young girl for suggesting that he was a disciple of this same Jesus. How did this change occur within Peter? It came through looking to the one who is above and receiving the Holy Spirit. The God of life gives us a new vision for understanding all things, even death.

Let us pray:  Blessed Trinity, ever holy and sustaining all things, it is your desire that what is in heaven may also be on earth. With eyes raised above grant that we may look anew on the things of this earth, filled with your beauty and proclaiming the ever-present opportunity of grace.
