Fifth Tuesday in Ordinary Time

Daily Reflection

Fifth Tuesday in Ordinary Time

Don’t sweat the small stuff.

From today’s Scripture: “He responded, ‘Well did Isaiah prophesy about you hypocrites, as it is written:This people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines human precepts.’”—Mk 7:6-7

A while back, I joined a group that was entering into preparation for total Consecration to Jesus through Mary. Each day for 33 days participants would listen to a reading from St. Louis de Montfort, meditate on it, listen to a reflection, and then pray. I was very good the first few days, then would miss a couple of days and frantically try to catch up by listening to 2 days at a time. I became so focused and worried about missing a day that I kept starting over. I became so stressed at getting it right I lost sight of why I was doing it.

This went on for about a week when I finally heard what the sister guiding the sessions said each day. “If you missed a session it’s o.k. Please know it is so good you are with us today.”

This is what Jesus is warning us about. Do not get so caught up in the process that you lose sight of him and what he most desires. Jesus cares about what is in our hearts. He does not desire hearts filled with checklists. He wants our hearts filled with his love and mercy. He wants us in all we do to do it out of love for him and for one another.

Let us pray: Jesus, today help me to keep my eyes on you and to seek only those things that draw me closer to you. Help me to not get bogged down in the things of this world.
