Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Good choices

From today’s Scripture: “You are the salt of the earth; but if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned? It is no longer good for anything, but is thrown out and trampled underfoot.”—Mt 5:13

Years ago, BRL (before religious life), I was having lunch with my stepmom. We both loved to read and I told her about a wonderful mystery series I had fallen in love with. I loaned her one of the books. About an hour later, there was a knock on my door, and there stood my stepmom with the book. As she handed me the book, she said, “as a Christian, I cannot read this and you should not be reading it either.”

I was stunned and asked her what she meant. She said, “as a Christian you must not let what is not holy enter the window of your soul.” When she left, I started rereading the book I gave her, searching for what made her so quickly close it. After rereading the first chapter, I closed the book and threw it out.

Salt will lose its flavor when impurities are introduced or if it absorbs humidity which causes it to evaporate. This leaves behind a substance that looks like salt but does not taste like it.

Jesus wants us to be the salt of the earth. In order to be that salt, we must be vigilant in our choices and in what we surround ourselves with. It is so easy to become blind and numb to what we are allowing into our minds and souls. I had read several books by this author and failed to see the subtle changes in the main character and overall direction the books were going.

Let us pray: Jesus, thank you for placing in my life strong people of faith to guide me back to you when I am led away. Help me today to be aware of what I am allowing into my life. Give me a heart that seeks only you.
