Fifth Monday of Easter

Daily Reflection

Fifth Monday of Easter

Who is Jesus?

From today’s Scripture: “Philip said to him, ‘Master, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Have I been with you for so long a time and you still do not know me, Philip?’”—Jn 14:8-9

In John’s Gospel, the disciples seem to know next to nothing, though they followed Jesus for three years. It’s as if they don’t know one of their closest friends. This must have frustrated Jesus, as he asks Philip, “Have I been with you for so long a time and you still do not know me?”

Do we know Jesus as we should? We may recite the creed, receive holy Communion, or read Scripture, yet be filled with doubt and confusion. Is Jesus really who he says he is? We may find the answer in verse six, as Jesus declares, “I am the way and the truth and the life.”

Let us pray: Dear Jesus, you know that we often doubt and feel far from you. Help us to come to know you as a dear friend. May our lives proclaim with certainty that you truly are the way, the truth, and the life.
