Daily Reflection

Alphonsus Liguori

They all ate and were satisfied.

From today’s Scripture: “When Jesus heard of the death of John the Baptist, he withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself. The crowds heard of this and followed him on foot from their towns. When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, and he cured their sick.”—Mt 14:13-14

Today’s Scripture reveals Jesus as man and Jesus as God. I am struck by Jesus’ reaction to the death of his cousin John the Baptist. He withdraws to a deserted place to mourn. We can all relate to his devastation of losing a beloved family member. His heart is heavy; but it is also moved when he sees the crowd that followed him. He reacts as God, the Good Shepherd, curing the sick and feeding the thousands with just five loaves and two fishes. They all ate and were satisfied.

Miracles occurred that day—and today—because Jesus, as man, understands our needs and Jesus, our God, is always there to take care of us.

Let us pray: Dear God, we turn to you in times of need, and you are there. May I also turn to you in gratitude for your presence in my life.
