8th Thursday in Ordinary Time

Run, don’t walk!

From today’s Scripture: “He threw aside his cloak, sprang up, and came to Jesus.”—Mk 10:50

Crossing-guards keep our children safe on their way to school. Wearing their orange reflective vests, these guards might yell down the street to the children, “Walk! Don’t run!” Their job is to try and keep the unruly kids away from trouble.

When it comes to Jesus, though, we’re instructed the opposite: “Run! Don’t walk!” We are not to be overly cautious in our pursuit of faith. It might be the one area in our life where we are called to reckless abandon. Isn’t that the way of love? Of course, there’s always more to the story, plenty of caution and care as we go through life. But when it comes to the deepest things, we are well advised—perhaps commanded?—to pursue them with gusto.

Let us pray: Today, Lord, give me your grace to follow you with passion. Yes, let me be safe, but embolden me to charge ahead at your command.
