8th Friday Ordinary Time

Give me nerve!

From today’s Scripture: “He overturned the tables of the money changers.”—Mk 11:15

How easily we accommodate! Each of us, almost with no exclusion, gets used to “things as they are,” and just goes along with the order of things. That even applies to our social order. We avoid making eye contact with the homeless person whom we might encounter. We make excuses for our lack of empathy for the poor.

Yet Jesus calls us to wake up! Where is our sense of moral outrage at the suffering around us? How can we allow poor people to work for low wages so we can get the cheapest prices? Jesus saw the poor being exploited at the door of worship. He couldn’t stand to ignore it. Can we find that passion in our lives?

Let us pray:  Enkindle in me the fire of your love, Lord. Help me to open my eyes to the suffering around me, to be an agent for social change.
