Daily Reflection

6th Thursday of Easter

Ask the right question.

From today’s Scripture: “When they had gathered together they asked him, ‘Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?’ He answered them, “It is not for you to know the times or seasons that the Father has established by his own authority.” —Acts 1:6-7

Often in the Gospels, Jesus reminds me of a very tired parent. The apostles spent not days or weeks, but years with Jesus and as he’s leaving, they still don’t get it.

Jesus explaining God’s plan—the disciples are fighting over which one of them is Jesus’ favorite. Jesus’ big moment as he gives himself over to die for all humanity—Peter charges in with a sword… There were no perfect people among Jesus’ apostles.

He called some of the least perfect people, maybe to show us that we cannot be perfect as we authentically follow God. What matters is that we don’t let the fear of being wrong hold us back from being Christ’s hands and feet in this world.

Let us pray: Dear Lord, you know me, you know my imperfections, yet you call me to help spread the word of your kingdom. Give me the grace, Lord, to rely on you to make beauty out of the mess that I can give.
