Daily Reflection

34th Saturday in Ordinary Time

Watch and pray

From today’s Scripture: “‘Be vigilant at all times and pray that you have the strength to escape the tribulations that are imminent and to stand before the Son of Man.’”—Lk 21:36

Today is the last day of the liturgical year. We are told to watch and pray. Be alert and look for the coming of God both in reflection on the mystery of the incarnation and in looking ahead to the second coming of Jesus.

Watch! Be vigilant! We are not to be sleeping and miss the coming of Jesus in our lives. Pray! Ponder deeply in our hearts, in the presence of God, the coming of Emmanuel (“God With Us”). Will there be tribulations? Sure. But we will see Jesus. What more do we want?

Let us pray: Jesus, tomorrow Advent will be here. Let this season of watching and praying be a renewal of life for us. Help us put aside the things of this world and look ahead to your coming.
