When Jesus calls, do we answer?
From today’s Scripture: “He stepped forward and touched the coffin; at this the bearers halted, and he said, ‘Young man, I tell you, arise!’”—Lk 7:14
Every day, Jesus calls us in little ways out of our own comfort to follow him more deeply. Are we stuck committing the same sins? Are we holding on to a grudge from someone who has hurt us in the past? Do we drive by a person who is homeless asking for help with our windows rolled up? In those moments, Jesus says to us, “arise!”
But it is not enough to acknowledge the call when we hear it; we have to act on it. When the young man in today’s Gospel hears Jesus, he immediately gets up and begins to speak. We may want to ask for five more minutes, or we think that maybe tomorrow would be a better day to start. But when Jesus calls us, it is only for something greater. Why not start now?
Let us pray: Jesus, help me to hear your voice today and give me the courage to go where you are calling me.
