Mystery of life

From today’s Scripture: “Therefore, neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who causes the growth.”—1 Cor 3:7

Lots of backyard summer gardeners, at least in northern climates, are busy into harvest season. A few tomatoes, maybe some corn or melons; surely the lettuce has been coming for a long time.

It’s hard for a gardener not to take credit for the fruit the garden finally yields, because so much tender loving care has gone into nurturing it. The same we could say about our children, in a sense. But there is a mystery at the core of all life that we can only acknowledge with awe. We care for it, we nurture it, but we didn’t make it!

Let us pray: Lord, nurture the mystery of your life within me. Help me to grow my own internal garden, one filled with the fruits (and vegetables!) of your love.
