Daily Reflection

1st Tuesday in Advent

Lucky day!

From today’s Scripture: “‘Blessed are the eyes that see what you see. For I say to you, many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, but did not see it, and to hear what you hear, but did not hear it.’”—Lk 10:23-24

It’s easy for us to consider our troubles, but have you ever considered how lucky you are? There are those who look around at unruly lives—too much debt, too many demands, whatever—and wonder, how did I get into this! A few steps back and you can consider that you live in a land of wealth, whether materially or in relations. Yes there are demands, but there are so many opportunities! Is it any wonder that people take great personal risk to immigrate to safer, more well-developed countries?

Jesus reminds his disciples today how lucky they are. Yes, their new life is full of uncertainty, and surely it is going against the grain of most everyone around them. Ah, but for the chance to be living with our savior, to see what we see, is there any better pearl to have? Let’s make our Advent about that.

Let us pray: Loving God, remind me today that you are with me every step of the way. Let me marvel in your goodness, in your newness, in your freedom. Help me today, Lord, to consider how lucky I am!
