About the Glenmary Farm Experience
Important information for volunteers and chaperones.
-
Accidents happen at the Glenmary Farm, so please make sure that all volunteers have insurance cards or other pertinent information with them when they arrive in Lewis County. When the insurance release forms are sent to volunteer director Joe Groseksend a copy of any pertinent medical information, so this information can be given to the Glenmary Farm Managers in case of an accident.

Two or three Glenmary Farm Managers operate the Glenmary Group Volunteer Program. The Farm Managers are volunteers who have decided to give up a year of their lives to do God’s work in Lewis County. They set up the schedule and menu and act as catalysts between the community and the volunteers. During the service week there will be many staff meetings between chaperones and Farm Managers. It is important for the well-being of the week that all problems are addressed during these meetings. The managers are interested in any things that may hamper the service week and communication is key for the smooth operation of the week. The Farm Managers represent Glenmary and our program in Lewis County.

We hope to remind those who volunteer with us that they can choose to serve, but oftentimes they can’t choose how they will serve. For the volunteer program to work, volunteers must accept they will serve not only the community of Lewis County, but also the community of volunteers that they volunteer with. The Glenmary Farm experience is fun but volunteers must work hard and stretch themselves to reap the greater gifts that the Glenmary Farm has to offer. We stress putting others first and yourself last and that the volunteers must be present to those he or she serves. We ask volunteers to take off their watches and enjoy the week on God’s time, to slow down from the hustle and bustle of their lives and enjoy the nature, people, service and the community of faith we hope they will find at the Glenmary Farm.

We recommend every volunteer bring about $25 with them. The volunteers often visit sites that cost between $3-$6 per person and we also have T-shirts and sweatshirts available for purchase at the end of the week. The T-shirts cost $10, the sweatshirts cost $15 and the hooded sweatshirts cost $20.
-
We ask that volunteers and chaperones leave their cell phones at home, but we know people oftentimes bring them for emergencies. BUT, please know that there is NO cell phone reception at the Farm. None. Zip. Zero. So, in lieu of a cell phone, we suggest that volunteers bring a calling card or be able to place a collect phone call home.
-
We also ask the volunteer groups to use the vehicles they come in to help transport volunteers to our sites. We use our vehicles for the dirty sites such as construction and ask groups to drive to the cleaner closer sites. So please budget some money for gasoline for your vehicles.
