From July 2003
Something
Else Shop.
The Glenmary Farm has taken responsibility for operating
a new work site: the local Something Else Shop #1, This
is a store where people can purchase clothing and other
knickknacks for a minimum price. The clothing and other
items are donated by people from throughout the United States
to the Christian Community Center. The Something Else Shop
is located in the Christian Community Center.
As
part of their week of service to the Farm, groups now work
at unpacking and sorting clothes and arranging displays.
Naturally, there is a bit of modeling that goes on as boxes
are opened and examined!
During
weeks when there are no volunteers at the Farm, the Farm
managersand I work in the store; it is open for customers
on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.We hope to be able to
open the store two times a week in the coming months. Proceeds
from the store go to the Christian Community Centers
fund that helps local people with rent and utility payments.
Goodbye
to Bryan Reaka. On July 5, Bryan completed his term
as Farm Manager. Bryan had to deal with the chapel fire
of December, the ice storm of February, many mudslides,
a tornado, and the creation of a New Volunteer Director
(me!). But Bryan persevered. He showed to many volunteers
the joys of serving others in Lewis County. His work ethic
and his constant mirth were a joy to all who came to serve
at the Glenmary Farm. I thank Bryan for his constant service
to all, his corny jokes, his booming laugh, and his brave
step in doing something counter-cultural and doing it very,
very well. Bryan
has accepted a position at Western Kentucky University as
a professor of workforce education. I am sure he will do
well in his new position.
Paul
Joseph Leaves Lewis County. On July 19 the Farm saw
another good friend depart the Lewis County area. Recent
volunteers knew Paul as the vounteer coordinator for People's
Self-Help Housing. But he first came to Vanceburg as a Glenmary
Farm Manager in 1995 and 1996 and went on to serve as an
Americorps volunteer for People's Self Help Housing. For
years,Farm volunteers have been blessed with Paul's kind,
calm and relaxed presence on construction sites. His patience
with volunteers is legendary. Paul is a friend of the Farm
and we will miss him dearly. He has moved to Toledo, Ohio,.
where he plans to continue his education and finish a degree
in art. Pottery is Pauls specialty. Thank you, Paul,
for being there for all those who have come to serve in
Vanceburg over the years.
Amy Lynn Apartment Complex Completed. Yes, after
10 long months, Amy Lynn is done! The Amy Lynn apartmentsin
Tollesboro, Ky., were built by People's Self-Help Housing
to provide affordable. low-income housing for Lewis County.
Amy Lynn will be administered by Home Place, a separate
division of PSHH, which helps folks find affordable housing.
Many of the volunteers this last 10 months have spent some
quality time in Tollesboro trying to finish this project.
The
New Chapel Is Almost There. The dedication is set for
August 9 at 2 P.M. It will be presided over by Father Jerry
Dorn. There will be refreshments after the dedication, and
all are invited. Pleae RSVP to me if you would like to attend.
(See the e-mail link below or call me at 606-796-3421.)
The Chapel is quite beautiful and it will be a beautiful
dedication.
A
New Aleson Baby. Finally, I would like to congratulate
former Farm Managers Erik and Janel Aleson on the birth
of their second child, Lane Aleson. I wish them the best,
and may God bless and protect their family.
Well
that is about all the news that I have for now. I hope that
everyone is well and may God always keep you.
And
if you missed the Vanceburg View from last month,
check it out.
Peace,
Joe
