A Vanceburg View

An Update From the Director of Glenmary's Volunteer Office

October 2007

The leaves are changing and we have finally received some moisture down here in Lewis County, Ky. Thanks to everyone who served with us this summer, which proved to be productive at the Glenmary Farm and in the community. For those who are wondering: Our garden lasted until mid-October—a bumper crop of green peppers just stopped producing.

Project Merry Christmas Date Set. Project Merry Christmas, a project of the Vanceburg Ministerial Alliance that provides toys, clothing and food vouchers for those in Lewis County who need a little help to have a Merry Christmas, is set for Dec. 18. Last year, Project Merry Christmas served over 250 children and gave food vouchers to about 250 families. The success of PMC requires a LOT of volunteers. If you’re available to help, please e-mail me or cal 606-796-3421.

If you are interested in sending toys or food for PMC please send them to Joe Grosek, Glenmary Farm, 2925 Lower Kinney Road, Vanceburg, KY  41179.

Neil Simon passes away. With much sadness, I report that Neil Simon, a fixture at the local nursing home and a parishioner at Holy Redeemer Church, passed away on Oct. 14. Neil was a great storyteller with an amazing knowledge of history and chemistry. His jovial nature and quick wit made him a joy to visit. May he rest in peace.

Glenmary Farm Wish List. First, I would like to thank my former supervisor, Susan Hellmann, for donating a couch to the Glenmary Farm. Thanks Susan. But my wish list continues:

  • Toys for Project Merry Christmas (new or lightly used, any age)

  • Food for Christian Community Center and Lending a Helping Hand Food Pantry

  • Tools, tools and more tools

  • Prayers

  • Blankets, bedding and other items for adult for Project Merry Christmas

  • Books, books, and more books for Project Merry Christmas and the Boys and Girls Club of Lewis County

  • School supplies for local children in need in Lewis County

  • A jigsaw for the Farm

  • Many more great weeks with great volunteers.
