This video examines the lives and culture of the first Appalachians: the Native Americans. The narrative reveals the tensions, struggles and shifting alliances between the Europeans and the Native Americans during the Indian Wars and the American Revolution. With settlements "beyond the mountains," a new era began dominated by an economy of small farms. Most of the "new" Appalachians were Irish, Scotch and English immigrants who brought their own music faith and stories. The "Great Awakening" of the early 1800's provides a context for the religious revivals which have become characteristic of life in the mountains

This video examines picks up the narrative around the beginning of the nineteenth century. The adaptations to Europeans life made by the Cherokee and their economic success led to rising tensions and eventually their removal to Oklahoma. A segment describes slavery in the Appalachian counties and the Civil War, pitting "brother against brother." The coming of the railroads to the mountains led to the loss of hardwood forests and to the mining of coal. The industrialists from the Northeast were soon pitted against the workers and unions in the "Coal Wars.

This final segment begins with how the radio changed life in the mountains. People who were isolated were now connected to the world. New ideas, new types of music and the preached word of God reached them on a regular basis. The intimacy of religion in small mountain churches is explained well. World War II set in motion a great "out migration" from the mountains. Stripmining for coal, flooding of family farms for recreation, and mountaintop removal continue to challenge the people and the states.
