Evangelization Update

Solidarity (A Global Awareness):
Making a Difference

In 1 Corinthians 16:3, St. Paul collected money and sent it to Jerusalem. Think international!

Father John Rausch used the example of fair trade coffee:"Think of the coffee that you buy. Typically, of the price you pay, the grower receives 5 cents per pound. The Fair Trade Grower receives 25 to 30 cents per pound enabling them to adequately support their families."

From the Catholic belief in solidarity, these convictions follow*:

Solidarity is the contemporary expression of the traditional Catholic image of the Mystical Body of Christ.

We are one human family, whatever our national, racial, ethnic, economic and ideological differences.

As Pope John Paul II has said, "We are all really responsible for all ."

How often do I reflect on whether my actions and checkbook reflect my values and Catholic social teachings?

When does my parish reflect on how it uses its time, talent and treasure beyond our local area?*

Examples of making a difference:

* In addition to the minutes of a Glenmary Commission on Evangelization meeting, questions and statements are from a workshop based on the video In the Footsteps of Jesus by the USCCB and Lay Ministers, Lay Disciples: Evangelizing Power in the Parish by Susan Blum-Gerding, Ed.D and Frank DeSiano, C.S.P., Paulist Press, 1999. The workshop is the work of the Social Action Committee of Immaculate Conception Church, Pulaski, TN.
