Catholics believe:*
Flowing from our God-given dignity, each person has basic rights and responsibilities.
People have a fundamental right to life and those things that make life truly human: food, clothing, housing, health care, education, security, social services and employment.
Those in authority have a duty to respect the fundamental human rights of all persons.
Corresponding to these rights are duties and responsibilities – to one another, to our families, and to the larger society – to respect the rights of others and work for the common good.
Advocacy is an essential part of “Rights and Responsibilities."
—What is advocacy and why is it important?
—Who is our parish being called to advocate for?

* In addition to the minutes of a Glenmary Commission on Evangelization meeting, questions and statements are from a workshop based on the video In the Footsteps of Jesus by the USCCB and Lay Ministers, Lay Disciples: Evangelizing Power in the Parish by Susan Blum-Gerding, Ed.D and Frank DeSiano, C.S.P., Paulist Press, 1999. The workshop is the work of the Social Action Committee of Immaculate Conception Church, Pulaski, TN.
