Father John Rausch spoke of how, in Genesis 1:31, God found creation to be good, not useful. We participate in God's continuing act of creating and sustaining the world. Sustainable economy means that we create the conditions where future generations have as many options in solving the earth's problems as we do now. We have to be careful not to limit the future for the next generations by our present apathy, disrespect or inattentiveness to the state of the environment.
From this Catholic belief, these convictions follow*:
Called to be co-creators with God and to have "dominion" over the earth, we are called to be good stewards of what God has entrusted to us. Our use must be directed by God's plan, not simply our own benefit.
The environmental challenge has fundamental moral and ethical dimensions to it that we simply cannot ignore.
Human beings are inextricably connected to one another, the earth and to God. How are you interdependent in your daily life with others, the earth and God?
How does your parish express being part of an interdependent world?
Examples of making a difference:

* In addition to the minutes of a Glenmary Commission on Evangelization meeting, questions and statements are from a workshop based on the video In the Footsteps of Jesus by the USCCB and Lay Ministers, Lay Disciples: Evangelizing Power in the Parish by Susan Blum-Gerding, Ed.D and Frank DeSiano, C.S.P., Paulist Press, 1999. The workshop is the work of the Social Action Committee of Immaculate Conception Church, Pulaski, TN. |
