Ideas That Work

An Evangelizing Yard Sale!

From Sister Marie Colette Gerry, Morgantown, Ky.

Parishioners of Holy Trinity Church in Morgantown, Ky., wanted to have a yard sale as a fundraiser for the church that also would impact how people think of Catholics in their county. From experience, they knew that events held on church property had been poorly attended. To have more interaction with all kinds of people who are not aware of the Catholic Church, a parishioner offered some property located on a busy highway. In addition to selling their treasures, teams of parishioners organized to bring food to the event. They invited not only the "workers" to eat but anyone who happened to be present.

A minister of a local church who had been rather "stand-offish" about Catholics was invited to join them for dinner. He enjoyed the meal, the company and the conversation. And the yard sale and meal was much talked about in the town. For those who came, bought an item and shared a meal, they now know the "Catholics" much better.
