Since 1999, remembrances of deceased Glenmarians have been featured on the Glenmary Web site. What follows is a compilation of those remembrances.

Sept. 1, 2008
Father Bob Bond
Father Bob Bond, a Glenmary missioner for over 50 years, died Sept. 1 in Cincinnati. Father Bob, in addition to spending many years as pastor of missions in Oklahoma, Kentucky, Virginia and North Carolina, also spent 13 years as the editor of Glenmary Challenge.

Brother Charlie Kennedy
Brother Charles Kennedy, a native of Elmira, N.Y., and missioner for almost 50 years, died on Jan. 11 at the Glenmary residence in Cincinnati. An accomplished musician, he spent his last years of assigned ministry in South Georgia..

Brother Larry Jochim
Brother Larry Jochim, 76, died at Mercy Fairfield Hospital on Sept. 27. As a member of the Brothers' Building Crew, Brother Larry spent his over 55 years as a home missioner buiding churches, halls—and community.

Father Bill Smith
Father Bill Smith, 85, died April 25, 2007 in Cincinnati. His gentle nature was key to his success in over 60 years of home mission ministry.

Father Joe Dean
Glenmary Father Joe Dean died on Feb. 14 from an apparent heart attack. But his legacy as a home missioner will live on.

Father Jack McNearney
In his almost 50 years of ministry, Father Jack McNearney worked to unite science, philosophy and faith. Father McNearney died on March 27 at his home in Kingsport, Tenn. |

Father Bob Healy
Described as a "true priest, Glenmary Father Bob Healy died on March 18 at the age of 83 after over 60 years of home mission ministry.

Father Joe Gartner
Ordained for the Diocese of Brooklyn in 1940, Father Joe became a Glenmary Home Missioner in 1951 and spent time in almost every area where Glenmary has served. A canon lawyer, he spent his later years working at the Marriage Tribunal in the Diocese of Covington (Ky.). He died peacefully on Nov. 5.

Brother Vince Wilmes
Brother Vincent Wilmes, who never knew a stranger, spent his life loving and serving the poorest of the poor.

Father Pat O'Donnell
Father Pat died July 22 in Cincinnati. His photos and stories in Glenmary Challenge gave memorable images of the home missions to U.S. Catholics.

Father John Marquardt
Father John died April 18 in Cincinnati. On his 50th jubilee he said he always wanted to be a priest: "I was born with that on my mind." |

Father Tom Field
Father Tom Field once received a death threat from the Klu Klux Klan because he was reaching out to help a victim of domestic violence. This "wonderfully effective missioner" ministered to all God's needy in his 29 years as a Glenmary missioner. Father Tom died Feb. 27 in Cincinnati.

Ed Haggerty
Glenmarian
for 50 years, Father Ed died of an apparent heart attack
in Dayton, Ohio. He had lived in residence at Holy Family
Church in Dayton since taking senior member status in 1994.
Eighteen years of his missionary life was spent in Texas,
where he was one of the first Glenmarians involved in Hispanic
ministry and Spanish language study.

Father Bob Berson
Superior
general and president for a total of 14 years, Father Robert
C. Berson provided the vision to lead Glenmary through the
turbulent years following Vatican II. But serving the "poorest
of the poor" was always his passion, forged in the many
years he served in Glenmary missions in the mountains of Southwest
Virginia. He also served as pastor for Glenmary's mission
in Russellville, Ala., where he presided over the dedication
of a new church. |

Father Jim Wilmes
A
Glenmarian for 46 years, Father Jim served in missions in
Western North Carolina, Claxton, Ga., and Hugo Okla. He also
worked promoting Glenmary's mission from its Cincinnati headquarters
and from an office in Fairfield, Conn. Since assuming senior
member status in 1998, he has lived in a backroom at Glenmary's
former mission in Robbinsville, N.C. He collapsed shoveling
snow Feb. 7. |

Father John Garvey
A
Glenmary priest for 49 years, Father John served missions
in Oklahoma, Georgia, Kentucky and Alabama as well as serving
for three years as Glenmary's vocation director. Since 1988
he has lived in Gate City, Va.,serving as director of Appalachian
Services. He died Feb. 12 in Gate City. After suffering
congestive heart failure in 1991, he wrote: "My life
belongs not to myself but to Jesus. For my part I need only
to trust Jesus, to be one with him and all of his creation....And
in life and death, all will be well.

Glenmary priest for 39 years, Father Tom shared his inner strength with the people he served in West Virginia, Kentucky, Georgia and Tennessee.

Brother Paul Wilhelm
A man of convictions and the highest integrity, he faced death fearlessly: “I see death as another step in the journey of life. I enjoyed my life and accept death as a blessing. I am open to God’s blessings in death as I received God’s blessings in life.”
