Going where the people are

Working in a chicken processing plant isn’t a pleasant job. Workers, many of whom are immigrants working for minimum wage, spend long days standing on their feet processing the chicken that ends up on our dinner tables. They often work in sub-par conditions and are often treated unfairly.

So, why would a Glenmary brother seek out a job in such a place? The answer, according to Brother David Henley, is simple: that’s where the people are.

Glenmary brothers have been going where the people are and meeting the needs of those people since Glenmary’s founding 70 years ago. Our cover story looks at religious brotherhood and the diverse ministries of Glenmary brothers who have dedicated their lives to home mission ministry, service—and, like Brother David, to chicken line theology!

Glenmary missioners have a long history of serving and welcoming the forgotten, the neglected and the stranger. Four African-American women from South Georgia witnessed that service and welcoming first hand 40 years ago and it led them to choose to join the Catholic Church—and integrate the local Catholic community. Today, they rejoice in their choice and their faith in an inspiring Easter story!

Clarence and Emma Jean Barbour also were the focus of an inspiring Easter story. They graced the cover of the Spring 2007 issue (“Amazing Journey, Amazing Grace”) as refugees of Hurricane Katrina who found a home at Glenmary’s St. Jude mission.

As a result of connecting with the local Glenmary mission, Clarence joined the Church in 2006 and Emma Jean joined in 2007. Clarence, 88, passed away in January and is now celebrating the new life promised by the Risen Christ. Alleluia!

The story above first appeared in the Spring 2008 Glenmary Challenge.
