New VBS Materials: Educators now have the choice of two Vacation Bible School programs to help educate children about mission in our own land

“Missionaries In Our Own Land” is the newest addition to Glenmary’s Educate & Inspire mission education materials and is the second of two Vacation Bible School programs for children ages four-12.

The five-day program introduces young people to men and women in our own land who have responded to the missionary call received in baptism. Some lived long ago—such as Junipero Serra and Kateri Tekakwitha. Others are still living and working as missionaries today.

Each day’s stories and activities invite children to explore the lives of those who took seriously the call of Jesus to follow him and to share the good news of God’s love. The program hopes to foster the awareness that when we do likewise, we are responding to our baptismal call to be missionary.

This program intends to help children understand that “mission” is something that happens where we live—not just in foreign lands.

The story above first appeared in the Autumn 2007Glenmary Challenge.
