| Glenmary Awards Cash Prizes to Cincinnati, Covington High School Seniors
CINCINNATI (April 2, 2007) —
Winners in the 2007 Glenmary Home Mission Essay contest have been announced. The three award-winning seniors are being invited to receive their cash prizes from Glenmary’s president, Father Dan Dorsey, at St. Peter in Chains Cathedral on Home Mission Sunday, April 29.
Entries were invited from the Diocese of Covington and the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. The first-place $1,000 prize for the Diocese of Covington is being awarded to Christine Kues of Newport Central Catholic High School/St. Thomas Church. In the Archdiocese of Cincinnati the first-place $1,000 prize is being awarded to Lauren Head of St. Ursula Academy/Immaculate Heart of Mary Church. A second place prize of $500 is being awarded to Tiffany Miller of Marion Local High School/St. Nicholas Church, also in the Cincinnati archdiocese.
Essays addressed this topic in 500 words or less: “How do you live the mission of Jesus in your everyday life?”
“We believe young people today have high ideals and a real desire to live out their faith,” said Father Dan Dorsey, president of Glenmary Home Missioners, in the letter sent last fall to all pastors, directors of religious education and Catholic high schools in the two dioceses. He encouraged everyone to see this essay contest as an opportunity “to invite high school seniors to express that idealism—and to deepen their awareness of the role they play in building up the Kingdom of God.”
Glenmary Home Missioners (priests, brothers and lay coworkers) serve in areas where less than
three percent of the population is Catholic, a significant percent have no church affiliation and the poverty rate is almost twice the national average. Glenmary is known for deeply respecting the many cultures encountered in the home missions—Appalachian, Native American, African American, and Latino, among others. Their missionary activity includes building Catholic communities, fostering ecumenical cooperation, evangelizing the unchurched, social outreach and working for justice.
