Glenmary Challenge Wins Four Catholic Press Awards!

CINCINNATI—Glenmary Challenge won four awards at this year's Catholic Press Association convention in Nashville May 26—and two of these were individual awards for Father John Rausch and Father Vic Subb. Here are the specifics:

Second place for "best cover 4 color, large": Challenge won for the Winter 2005 cover (Hurricane Evacuees Flee). "This is a real coup for us," says editor Karen Hurley, "since we are competing in this category with ALL Catholic magazines--which includes St. Anthony Messenger, U.S. Catholic, America, etc." The judges' comments published in the The Catholic Journalist, said: "Excellent cover design, from typography to color accessorizing. Sophisticated look. Good use of hierarchy and contrast. Harmonious."

Third place for "best essay, mission magazines": Challenge won for Father John Rausch's remembrance of Brother Vince Wilmes in Winter 2005 ("The Kindest Man I Ever Met"). The judges' commended Father John's "heart-warming examples" and "lovely anecdote" about one of the Little League Teams: "One year the kids creatively inserted their team name into the Hail Mary: 'pray for us Senators.'"

Honorable mention for "best feature article, mission magazines": Challenge won for Father Vic Subb's article in Autumn 2005 ("Building Church in South Georgia's Onion FIelds").

Third place for "general excellence, mission magazines": This category calls for submission of three consecutive issues—and Glenmary submitted Summer, Autumn and Winter 2005. The judges said: "Solid magazine structure and efficient execution make the most of a smallish (20 pages) publication. Engaging opening letter and nuggety departments (with multiple entry points) up front, and feature and back-of-book pages are populated with real-people stories and photos."
